OVER THE YEARS, I have been repeatedly asked about the availability of
model decals
for various types of equipment used on the Yosemite Valley Railroad as well as equipment plans,
route maps, more research information, etc.
In response, I set up YOSEMITE MODELS as a way to encourage more modeling of the Yosemite Valley
Railroad by making some of these items available.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ITEMS
Modeling Merced Falls CD -
This is the first of a series of "modeling" CDs. My goal with these
CDs is to
share all of the information that I have accumulated which will help model
various areas along
the
prototype YV. This first CD in this series is on Merced Falls. All
information has been saved in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. There are over 300
pages of information on this CD. It includes a copy of the 1938 Sanborn map of
Merced Falls (at a scale of 1"=100') and 191 prototype photos, of which
144 have never been previously published. (All of the photos of Merced Falls in
my collection are on this CD unless they are in my book, Trains to Yosemite.
Some of the photos in my book are also on this CD.) There are also new scale
drawings of the box factory (compressed), hotel (compressed), lumber mill,
sawdust flume supports, and turntable. Drawings for the company store and
manager's residence, which are on other CDs, are also included although with
prototype photos. I've also included the files for modeling Angelos Place, the
Dining Room, the Lumber Trams, the YV Station, and the Water Tank (which are all
on the Drawings CD) on this CD in order to put all of the Merced Falls
information in one place. There is also a list of all published photos of Merced
Falls as a general reference source. This
list summarizes the files on the CD
while here is a sample page from the file on the
Lumber
Mill (2.3 megs).
Modeling information is included for a number of the buildings along with model
photos of 4 structures. The price of this CD, including U.S. domestic shipping,
is $15.00. Item M001
Modeling El Portal CD
- This is the second of the series of "modeling" CDs. This CD is on El Portal. All
information has been saved in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. There are over 225
pages of information on
this CD. It includes 167 prototype photos, of
which 99 have never been previously published. (All of the photos of El Portal
in my collection including those in my book, Trains to
Yosemite, are on this CD. With only a couple of exceptions, all of the
photos are 8" wide for horizontal format photos or 6" high for vertical format
photos.) There are new scale drawings of two of the
small buildings at the Standard Oil facility along with drawings for a number of
other buildings that are on the Drawings CD. These latter drawings include the
railroad station, train shed, El Portal Inn, turntable, Government Warehouse, SO
office building, and railroad cottages in order to put all of the El Portal
information in one place. There is also a list of all published photos of El
Portal as a general reference source. This list summarizes the files on the CD
while here is is a sample page from the file on the
Standard Oil facility
in El Portal (3.4 megs).
Modeling information is included for a number of the buildings along with model
photos of several structures and an overview of the El Portal area on my layout.
The price of this CD, including U.S. domestic shipping, is $12.00. Item M002
Modeling North
Fork to National Lead CD Set
- This is the third in the series of "modeling" CDs I am
developing. This
two-CD set covers the area between North Fork and National Lead. All
information has been saved in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. There are 334
pages of information on these two CDs plus 40 pages
of drawings and 31 pages of color modeling photos. They include 334
prototype photos, of which 199 have never been previously published.
(All of the photos of this area that are in my collection are on these CDs.)
Not all of the photos are great and some are “grab shots” by amateur
photographers but nearly all of them are interesting. With a few exceptions,
all of the horizontal photos are 8” wide and vertical ones 7˝” tall. There
are new scale drawings of the National Lead plant (compressed) plus drawings
of 11 other structures from this section of the railroad which are also on
the Drawings CD; this puts all of the information on this area in one place.
There is also a list of all published photos of the area between North Fork
and National Lead as a general reference source (there are less than two
dozen known photos of this area which are not on one of these two CDs). In
all, there is over 1.1 GB of information on this set. This
list summarizes the files on the CDs
while here is a sample page from the file on
Briceburg (2.8
megs) and a sample page from
Moss
Canyon (6.8 megs). The price of this
two-CD set,
including U.S. domestic shipping, is $20.00. Item M003
Modeling E/o
Merced Falls to E/o Bagby CD Set
- This is the fourth in the series of "modeling" CDs I am releasing. This
two-CD set covers the area from east of Merced Falls to east of Bagby.
Subjects including the tunnels, the bridges built as part of the relocation
including the Barrett Bridge, Jasper, Detwiler,
Kittridge, the Bagby Bridge, Bagby, and the area between Bagby and North
Fork. All
information has been saved in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format. There are 475
pages of information on these two CDs plus 18 pages of color modeling photos. The
two CDs include 483 prototype photos, of which 363 have never been previously published.
There are 50 color prototype photos of the YV in this section of the
railroad. (All of the photos of this area that are in my collection are on these CDs.)
With a few exceptions,
all of the horizontal photos are 8” wide and vertical ones 7˝” tall. Revised
drawings for the Bagby station (the stairs in the front of the building have
been changed to a ramp) are included for those who already have the Drawings
CD. There is also a list of all published photos of the area between Merced
Falls
and North Fork as a general reference source (there are less than 40 known photos of this area which are not on one of these two CDs). In
all, there is over 1.27 GB of information on this set. This
list summarizes the files on the CDs
while here is a sample page from the file on
Tunnels 3 and 4
(4.8 megs). The price of this
two-CD set, including U.S. domestic shipping, is $20.00. Item M004
Modeling Merced to
Snelling CD Set
- This is the fifth in the series of "modeling" CDs I am releasing. This
two-CD set covers the area from Merced to Snelling. Subjects include the
early and later SP stations in Merced, buildings in the Merced yards
including the station, roundhouse, water and oil tanks, sand house, etc.,
and the area between Merced and Snelling. All information has been saved in
Adobe Acrobat
(.pdf) format. There are 336 pages of prototype information on these two CDs
plus 17 pages of color modeling photos. The two CDs include 321 prototype
photos, of which 248 have never been previously published. There are 22
color prototype photos of the YV along this portion of the railroad. (All of
the photos of this area that are in my collection are on these CDs.)
All of the horizontal photos are 8” wide and vertical ones 7” tall. Revised
drawings for the Merced station and Carpenter/Woodworking Shop are included
for those who already have the Drawings CD. In addition, the CDs include all
of the other drawings for Merced and Snelling which are on the Drawings CD
so that all of this information is in one place. There are also new
construction templates for the Merced station along with information on
using the templates. (It is much easier to use these templates to
scratchbuild this structure than to scale from the plans and lay out each
piece.) In addition, there is a list of all published photos of the area
between Merced and Snelling as a general reference source (there are less
than 6 known photos of this area which are not on one of these two CDs). In
all, there is nearly 900 GB of information on these two CDs. This
list
summarizes the files on the CDs while here is a sample
page from the file on
the Merced Station (3.8 megs). The price of this two-CD set,
including U.S. domestic shipping, is $20.00. Item M005
Drawings CD - I have
compiled all of my scale
YV drawings onto a single CD. There are 80 files on this CD covering 92
different buildings and pieces of equipment. The files have been saved in Adobe
Acrobat
(.pdf) format. The majority of the files include not only plans but also
photos, historical information, and modeling suggestions. While some of the
photos included are in my Trains to Yosemite book, the goal of sharing as
much information as possible allowed me to also include some photos which better
illustrate the particular subject but were not good enough for book publication.
The typical file is 4 pages long with 1-2 pages of drawings, a page of
information, and a 1-2 pages of additional photos. However, other files are much
longer; the Caboose file is 27 pages long while the Merced Station and Merced
Roundhouse are 11 pages each. There are a total of 367 pages of information on
this CD. As indicated on this detailed list of the
drawings, drawings are included for every station on the line except for
Pleasant Valley, for every building in the Merced yards, several water tanks,
much of the M of W equipment, etc. Buildings range from single hole outhouses to
a scan of the original construction drawing for the El Portal station and
several bridges. Here are a couple of pages of a drawing of
M of W 06 for
which I don't have a lot of prototype information and a page from the file
for the Barrett station
drawn from MID plans. The price of this CD, including U.S. domestic shipping, is
$18.00. Item P001
Route Maps CD - This CD contains copies of 99 original engineering
route maps of the railroad. The maps are 11x14 in size and are at a scale
of 1"=800'; they overlap on both edges. The maps are saved at a resolution of 200 dpi (.jpg format) and are
approximately 3-4 megs each in size. You will need a program capable of viewing
.jgp format files such as Photoshop Elements or MS Photo Editor. To print the
maps (unless you can print 11x14 drawings), you will need the ability to either
reduce the size of the images or have a program which will allow you to select
Print to Fit. The maps cover the entire original route of
the Yosemite Valley Railroad from Merced to El Portal. An additional group
of maps covers the 1920s relocation from Merced Falls to Detwiler. The maps show
right-of-way, track alignment, original sidings, bridges, the Merced River and
other water courses, and some railroad buildings. Here is a sample of one of the
pages on this CD showing the original trackage at
Pleasant Valley. The
price of this CD, including U.S. domestic shipping, is $8.00. Item R001
Research Resources CDs - This two-CD set is a compilation of some of
the research resources used to write my book, Trains to Yosemite. There
are over 520 individual files
on these two CDs. Most are Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
files with the rest saved as MS Excel (.xls) files. You will need the free Abode
Acrobat Reader program to view the .pdf files. (Available from
www.adobe.com). The files range from
information from original Yosemite Valley Railroad company files and magazine
articles to oral interviews, ICC reports, California Railroad Commission
Inventories, analysis of traffic spreadsheets, and examples of timetables over
the years. The files are indexed for easier reference. Here are a couple of
samples from this CD: a page from the
CRC 1914 report and a
copy of an
original report on loads. The price for this two-CD
pack, including domestic shipping, is $12.00. Item R002
Route Maps and Research Resources CD Pack - This option includes both
the Route Maps CD and the Research Resources CDs (three CDs total). The price of
all three CDs, including domestic shipping, is $15.00. Item R003
Caboose Decals - I have HO scale
caboose decals for sale to letter
any of the cabooses owned by the Yosemite Valley Railroad including the brass
models imported by Westside Models and Beaver Creek Models. These decals were
printed by Rail Graphics and are $7/sheet including U.S. domestic postage;
painting suggestions and lettering diagrams are included. One sheet will letter
all seven of the cabooses owned by the railroad over the years. Item D001
Log Car Decals - I also have HO/O scale decals for the YV log cars
available. Each set includes both HO and O scale lettering and is sufficient to
letter one log car. All road name variations
(YOSEMITE VALLEY RAILROAD,
YOSEMITE VALLEY RR, and YV) can be done in HO but only the abbreviated YV is
included in O scale. These decals were printed by Rail Graphics and are $7/sheet
including U.S. domestic postage; painting suggestions and lettering diagrams are
included. Item D002
Locomotive Decals - Decals for HO scale lettering all of the YV
locomotives are now available. One decal set will letter the No. 20 and first
No. 26 plus the remaining 8 engines in the original lettering style and
also any 5 engines in the later "billboard" scheme. Thus, one sheet will letter
all five of the Beaver Creek 2-6-0 engines during any era (original or
billboard) or all 10 engines in the original scheme. If you are modeling the
post 1930s and need to letter more than 5 engines, you would need two sets of
decals. These decals were printed by Rail Graphics and are $16/sheet including
domestic postage; lettering diagrams are included. Item D003
Box Car Decals - These decals will letter any of the 13 box cars
acquired by the YV in 1907 and later.
The
decal sheet includes side and end lettering (together with capacity and repack
lettering). One sheet will letter two box cars in the simplified scheme used in
later years. Lettering is also included for the early factory scheme with the
large "Y", "V", and "RR"; it takes two sheets to letter one car in this scheme
due to the large size of the side lettering. These decals were printed by Rail
Graphics and are $8 per sheet including domestic postage; lettering diagrams are
included. Item D004
Grade Crossing Sign Decals - The YV had standard cross
buck-type grade crossing signs at public grade
crossings which included not only the standard "RAILROAD CROSSING" painted on
the sign but also the "YOSEMITE VALLEY RR" painted on the post. This decal sheet
provides enough lettering for 5 grade crossing signs if lettered on both sides
of the sign or 10 grade crossing signs if lettered on one side only (for a shelf
layout for example). These decals were printed by Rail Graphics and are $8 per
sheet including domestic postage; a lettering diagram is included. Item D005
Passenger Car Decals - These decals provide all of the
lettering needed to letter any of the various
passenger cars
owned by the YV including RPO 107, combines 105 and 106, coaches 302-305 and
observation cars 330 and 331. One decal sheet will letter RPO 107 and all
three of the Beaver Creek passenger cars (105, 302, and 330). These decals
were printed by Rail Graphics and are $8 per sheet including domestic
postage; lettering diagrams are included. Item D006
Flat Car and Ballast Car
Decals - I now
have HO scale decals for the YV flat cars and ballast cars available. One
set will letter 2 flat cars and 1 ballast car. The flat car decals include
both the original
YOSEMITE VALLEY lettering scheme and the latter YV lettering scheme. All 12
flat car numbers (501-512) are included and all 6 ballast car numbers,
together with capacity and other data. In addition, lettering is provided
for the original flat car shown on Page 19 of Railroads of Yosemite
Valley. These decals were printed by Rail Graphics and are $8/sheet
including U.S. domestic postage; painting suggestions and lettering diagrams
are included. Item D007
Maintenance
of Way Decals
- I also have HO scale decals to letter all of the Maintenance of Way
equipment. This single sheet will letter M of W 01 through 011. These decals
were printed by Rail Graphics and are $8/sheet including U.S. domestic
postage; painting suggestions and lettering diagrams are included. Item D008
Hicks Locomotive and Car Works Pin - The Yosemite Valley Railroad
purchased a set of three matched passenger cars in 1907 from the Hicks Locomotive and
Car Works in Chicago. These cars were
Combination
Car 105, Coach 302, and Observation 330. Observation 330 is currently being
restored for operation on the Niles Canyon Railway in Fremont, CA. To celebrate
the centennial of this historic car, Sundance Marketing was commissioned to
produce a commemorative
custom lapel pin based on the unique design of the
Hicks Locomotive and Car Works floor plate found in this observation car. (A floor plate covers access to the bolster pin
on a passenger car.) This is a metal pin with a 24K polished gold raised rim and
lettering and soft enamel in the recesses. It is provided with a standard
clutch fastener. The pin is 3/4" in diameter. These pins are not available from other pin outlets. The price
of one pin is $5.00 including domestic shipping. Item H001
YVRR Vernal Falls Logo Pin - This custom metal lapel pin features
the YVRR Vernal Falls corporate logo. It has
a standard clutch fastener,
measures 1" across, and was manufactured in polished gold by All About Pins.
The price of one pin is $5.00 including domestic shipping. Item H002
International Shipping on CDs - International shipping
(4-7 days) of any of the CDs or CD sets or for any of the decals or pins is available for an additional $5.00,
regardless of the number of CDs or items. Item S001
FUTURE ITEMS
The next volume of the Modeling
series will be on the equipment owned by the YVRR.
